Curzon Hall of Dhaka University – The Building of British Raj





The Curzon Hall of the Dhaka University is a construction of the British era and currently using as the Science Faculty of the university. It was intended to make a town hall in the name of Lord Curzon, the British ruler of India with the designation of Viceroy who laid the inaugural stone of the Curzon Hall in 1904. After establishing the Dhaka University in 1921, the building becomes the base of science studies.

Short History of the Curzon Hall

As the consequences of partition movement of the Bengal in1905, the Curzon Hall’s construction was started in 1904 and was completed in 1908 by the British Viceroy, Lord Curzon when he paid a Dhaka visit and put the foundation stone of the building of Dhaka College library. There was a requirement of new building to shift the College and then it becomes the Grand Assembly of Dhaka College. The hall has 18 rooms and it cost of Taka 3 lakhs to complete the structure in 1908.

Its huge structural construction is standing as a tribute to the educational heritage of Dhaka, Bangladesh. After the partition of the Bengal, Dhaka University established in 1921. By transferring Dhaka College elsewhere, the Curzon Hall becomes the part of the Dhaka University. There were held the classes of the physics department at that time.
